Okay, this might be ~controversial~, but I absolutely despise the arbitrary jumps in time. I just think, yeah the Doctor is a terrible driver, but the TARDIS can get it right when she wants to, and… it just feels like another way in which the Doctor fucks Amy over that gets swept under the rug because it’s just a plot device and bleh.

Once was one thing—I understand meeting Amelia and finding her twelve years later. But she’s psychologically damaged and it’s used as a joke. 

Somehow, he managed to find Rose immediately after she turned him down, and he took Martha to the right time after traveling for a while. Yes, he is a bad pilot, but I get the impression it’s more about the TARDIS disregarding everything he does rather than his actually being terrible.

The TARDIS can and does get it right all the time, but she also said herself in The Doctor’s Wife that she always takes him where he needs to go, rather than where he wants to go. Maybe those arbitrary jumps in time happen because they’re necessary for Amy’s development as a human being.

12 years as a child gave her the chance to raise her own daughter, become a functioning member of society, learn to cope with reality on its terms rather than being devoured by the fantasy.

2 years gave her a chance to cement her relationship with Rory before she began adventuring in earnest, and we saw how important Rory was to Amy and the Doctor when he was around. The second spate of 2 years gave the Williams a taste of a normal life with a house and Christmas dinners and playing water gun tag or whatever.

I don’t see the jumps in time as arbitrary at all. Amy is not clingy and hopeless like Rose - she has a shining future and she can make her way just fine where she is. The Doctor was always an escape rather than her hope for a better life (as in Rose’s case) or a lifelong companion (Donna). When you first meet the Doctor so young and have so many chances at a beautiful, normal life with a man you love, the greatest gifts you can sometimes receive are the ones where the magical man in the box just gets the hell out of your hair for a while so you can figure it all out on your own.
